About Me

Bountiful Utah cello teacher Steven Farr

Welcome to the personal website of cellist and Suzuki teacher Steven Farr! Whether you’re a potential student seeking lessons, a fellow musician or teacher seeking a colleague, or a classical music fan seeking a performer for your next house concert, I hope you find what you’re looking for here.

Who Am I?

I am a passionate cellist, Suzuki teacher, and arts administrator.  I am the founder and director of Counterpoint School of Music, a community music school in Bountiful, Utah that provides lessons, classes, and workshops for local students of all ages and experience levels.

What Is My Background?

I first picked up the cello at age 11 in 5th grade orchestra class.  I began private lessons two years later and continued through junior high and high school, fostered by teachers who challenged and encouraged me and helped me to build a deep love of music and cello playing.  I earned a bachelor’s degree in music at the University of Utah, studying cello with John Eckstein and Pegsoon Whang and chamber music with Dr. Hasse Borup and Gerald Elias.  At the University of Utah, I served as cellist of the Mount Olympus Honors String Quartet from 2013-2015.  I continued my education at East Carolina University, earning a master’s degree in cello performance and Suzuki string pedagogy under the guidance of cellist Emanuel Gruber and noted Suzuki teacher Joanne Bath.  I have received Suzuki teacher training from Joanne Bath, Carey Cheney, Priscilla Jones, and Avi Friedlander, and I am currently pursuing a second master’s degree in arts administration through Southern Utah University.

As a performer, I have played in solo recitals, masterclasses, chamber music festivals, orchestras, and ballet, opera, and musical theatre performances throughout the United States and Europe.  Some of my personal favorite past performances include:

  • Solo recitals at Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, Virginia

  • Performances of Mozart’s Don Giovanni in the Estates Theatre, Prague (where Mozart conducted the opera’s premiere!)

  • The NextGen Initiative of the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival

  • The Count of Monte Cristo with Salt Lake’s Pioneer Theatre Company

  • The solo cello role in Rob Gardner’s Lamb of God in the Salt Lake Tabernacle

  • Local chamber music performances with my Davis County, Utah colleagues

As a teacher, I have maintained a busy cello studio in Davis County, Utah since 2018.  I have been a faculty member at the North Carolina Suzuki Institute, I direct youth cello ensembles, and I lead clinics, workshops, and cello & chamber music coaching sessions for public school orchestras throughout Davis County.
